ALEXANGEL ESTEVEZ is best known for his passion for the great outdoors. Whether it is landscapes or cityscapes, his eyes capture the scene and his imagination explores the details of nature that may otherwise elude others. He enjoys being swept away with awe-inspiring views. He uses clouds as one way to express emotion in his paintings.
As an artist, he expresses himself through oils on canvas… by pushing and pulling the paint and capturing moments in nature. His full joy is to paint on site and make that exciting first mark. The intention is not to duplicate, but to bring back a piece that inspired him. The studio he chooses to be in is the land around him . His goal is to take the viewer on that same journey he had and to experience the scene as he did.
Alexangel’s interest in the arts started at a young age in East Los Angeles. In 2006 he moved to the east coast to pursue his career in visual fine arts and attended Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland. There he double majored in Studio Art and Graphic Design. He was awarded an AA in Fine Arts in 2008. Alexangel was then accepted at the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond VA. In 2011, he was awarded his BFA degree cum laude with a major in Graphic Design. Since that time, the artist has been winning awards and invited for single artist exhibitions in Virginia and Florida.
The English Romantic painter John Constable has had a major influence in Alex’s paintings.
ROSS MERRILL (1943-2010). A painter his entire life, Ross also rose to prominence in the field of art conservation. He ultimately became the Head of Conservation at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. Through his work , the National Gallery's expertise and reputation increased such that it is now one of the world leaders in art analysis and conservation. He thus became a notable resource for the study of methods and materials of fine art painting.
Always an outdoorsman, Ross understood his subject when painting landscapes. From his studio in Old Town, Alexandria, he traveled to the Eastern Shore, along the Potomac River, to Western sites in Wyoming, and to the Bahamas, always in search of compelling subject matter, which he captured swiftly and accurately with his brush. He lectured widely about painting, and achieved recognition: twice, his works appeared on the cover of American Artist Magazine.
