On June 15, 2011, the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) Arts Program announced that Maryland artist Andrei Kushnir was awarded the Juror’s Choice Award for his painting “Potomac Riverscape,” in the first Biennial Maryland Regional Juried Art Exhibit, to be held from August 1 through October 16, 2011.

The competition was open to artists in Maryland, Northern Virginia and Washington, DC., and of over 1,100 images by more than 320 artists, 56 works were chosen for the exhibit.

The jury for selection were Helen Frederick, professor, George Mason University; Helen Jackson, independent art consultant/curator; and Evangeline J. Montgomery, artist, retired program development officer, United States Department for the Arts American Program.

Andrei Kushnir's passions, art and nature, are expressed through a patient, refined and diligent commitment. Time, willingness to work long hours in heat and extreme cold, to perch on a rock over an icy stream, or in it, if that is where the best composition is to be found - or to hike a long distance with easel and canvas strapped to his back, all pay dividends in these persistantly arresting landscapes.
